Project: Allis Chalmers G Basket Weeder

Oh boy, this will be interesting... I went all the way out to Salt Spring Island to get this old G. The previous owner and I spent the day trying to get it running but had no luck. In the end a compression test revealed low/no compression on one of the four cylinders. After a bit of discussion, he sold it to me for a fair price considering the motor is down. We hope to get it running by mid April, and plan on using it to cultivate our direct seeded crops. It came with a four row basket weeder (photo of it in back of truck below), which will suit our present bed system nicely. The G is set up wide, so it will straddle the same width our bigger field-work tractor does. This way we can spread amendments, till, make beds and mark out our planting rows with the bigger tractor, then cultivate in between the rows of crops with the basket weeder which mounts on to the belly of the G. Because the basket weeder is belly mounted, and because the motor on the G is behind the driver's seat, one can see without obstruction the crops under the tractor, making it possible to weed really close to the crops, apparently up to one inch. This should help reduce the time and money consuming hand hoeing on our several acres of carrots, lettuce, beets, turnips, parsnips, daikon...
